Understanding Emotional triggers

An emotional trigger is any situation, sensation, or interaction that activates a strong, often disproportionate emotional response. These reactions stem from our nervous system's attempt to protect us based on past, unresolved experiences. Learning to identify and navigate them is key to emotional resilience. Why Triggers Happen When we are triggered, the brain’s survival center—the amygdala—interprets a present situation as a potential threat. This triggers an automatic "fight, flight, or freeze" response. The Past Meets the Present: Triggers are rarely just about the current moment. They occur when a current event—such as a specific tone of voice or perceived rejection—resembles a past painful, threatening, or emotionally significant experience.Logical Brain Goes Offline: During a triggered state, the prefrontal cortex (responsible for rational thinking) becomes less accessible, which is why your reaction might feel immediate, automatic, and incredibly intense.
